APPENDIX A
PICK A TRAIN, ANY TRAIN
This appendix contains information about the long-distance
trains operated by Amtrak in the United States and VIA Rail in
Canada. Some (but not all) of the shorter routes are also men-
tioned, because of either high ridership or noteworthy scenery.
(Information about the Copper Canyon train in Mexico may be
found in chapter 14.)
I have not provided specific information about individual
Amtrak trains running within the Northeast Corridor. For one
thing, there are a lot of them—some run between Washington,
D.C., and New York; others extend up to Boston; and still others
swing northwest at New Haven, Connecticut, to go up through
Hartford to Springfield, Massachusetts. Some make more stops
than others and thus take longer to complete their routes. Some
of the trains are the high-speed Acelas, while the rest are Amfleet
cars and locomotives. In other words, there are simply too many
variables. I do have information for trains that pass through the
Northeast Corridor between New York and many points farther
south and west—the Cardinal and the Crescent, for example—
and for the Florida trains too.
I've provided both the name and number for each train—odd
numbers are for trains headed south and west, and even numbers
are for those headed north or east. A third number given to a
