funding, however, Amtrak could buy new equipment, reduce the
number of mechanical breakdowns, provide more trains on its
popular routes, run them at more convenient times, improve on-
time performance, and—OK, so this is my own personal addition
to the list—wash every window on every train every day. Sounds
like a good program, doesn't it?
What You Can Do
Write Letters
We all get to vote for or against one member of Congress, two
U.S. senators, and the president. Let me tell you: nothing has
more effect on an elected official than a real letter from a constit-
uent. Keep each letter short and to the point. Tell them you think
America should have a decent passenger rail system and that you
want them to support trains in general and Amtrak in particular.
Join the Club
There are many nonprofit organizations around the country that
actively promote rail transportation at the state and local levels.
I've included a list in the back of this topic. The National Asso-
ciation of Railroad Passengers focuses on Congress and the cur-
rent administration in Washington. I would certainly encourage
you to join this organization. I have been a member for years
and have served on NARP's national board of directors. Dues are
very reasonable, and Amtrak gives NARP members a 10-percent
discount on all rail fares. (Note: This discount does not apply
to sleeping-car accommodations.) For more information, go to
www.narprail.org. There is also a simple membership application
on page 344. Photocopy it, fill it out, write a check, and send it in!
