And now—fi nally!—we seem to be getting serious about
high-speed trains in the United States. On Election Day in the
fall of 2008, California voters approved a $10 billion bond issue
that was a green light for preliminary work to begin on a high-
speed rail line linking Los Angeles and San Francisco. Governors
and mayors in several Midwestern states are also organizing and
beginning to plan high-speed rail routes. Within months of taking
offi ce, President Barack Obama announced his support for build-
ing high-speed rail lines that would link several major American
