• Pack all the medications you need, plus those you might need.
• It can be hot, so take and wear a hat and use a strong
sunscreen.
• It's unlikely that you'll have a problem, but there are some
serious diseases lurking in some parts of the country, most
of which are transmitted by mosquitoes. Do the logical and
sensible thing: bring a good insect repellant. And use it!
• The local water is the most common cause of the ever-popular
la turista , or travelers' diarrhea. So do not drink the tap water.
There is plenty of bottled water available (just make sure the
seal around the cap is unbroken). Drink it, brush your teeth
with it, and wash your face with it. Shower with your mouth
closed. Don't eat any raw vegetables that may have been
washed. Fresh fruits and vegetables you peel yourself are fine.
It's also a good idea to wash your hands with soap before you
eat.
I know all this sounds ominous, but don't let what are really
only routine and commonsense precautions put you off. The
chances that you will get sick are small anyway, and you can
reduce them to virtually nil with what amounts to a few very
minor inconveniences. Makes sense, doesn't it?
The Tequila Express
The other train ride that should be mentioned here is the Tequila
Express. As the name implies, the national Mexican drink is the
theme of this excursion. The train is operated by Ferromex and
runs cross-country out of Guadalajara to the town of Amatitán.
Here passengers tour a hacienda that is home to one of the coun-
try's better-known distilleries, which produces the very excellent
Herradura tequila. Yes, for some passengers this is a rolling party,
