five-hour trip from Juárez just across the border from El Paso,
Texas. (Don't let that deter you: the buses are big, new, and air-
conditioned, and they even show movies en route.) If you opt
for the eastbound train, I recommend catching it in El Fuerte
rather than at its point of origin in Los Mochis. The reason is
that boarding is at 6 A.M. in Los Mochis but not until 9 at El
Fuerte, a much more convenient time. Whichever direction you
choose, it will mean an overnight stay in Chihuahua or in either
Los Mochis or El Fuerte.

the spectacular Copper Canyon route. Photo courtesy of Chihuahua al Pacifico Railroad
El Primero is very comfortable and well maintained, with a
decor that is appropriate to the great Southwest. In addition to
coaches, the consist includes a dining car and a lounge car where
drinks are served. Of course, all of the onboard staff speak excel-
lent English.
