In-Depth Information
There are four openings underneath this hopper car through which its cargo of grain is
unloaded. Photo courtesy of the author
and no top. Depending on the weight of the material they were
designed to carry, some gondola cars have higher sides than oth-
ers. You'll see all sorts of things being hauled in these cars: scrap
metal, iron and steel products, and almost anything else that's
heavy and doesn't need protection from the weather.
Hopper Cars
These look a lot like gondola cars, except they all have high sides
and many are covered. But all hopper cars have one thing in com-
mon: the interior walls slope toward trapdoors in the bottom of
the car through which the contents are unloaded. These cars are
used to carry such things as coal and grain in bulk.
