In-Depth Information
All meals are family-style in Amtrak dining cars, which is a great opportunity to get to
know other passengers. In this case, however, family-style meant one big family.

Superliner Dining Cars
The diner is located in the middle of the train next to the lounge
car so that no passenger is too far from either car. Food is pre-
pared in a gleaming stainless-steel kitchen on the lower level and
sent up in a dumbwaiter. The menu offerings change periodically
but are pretty much the same on all trains. One or two regional
dishes are often featured: for instance, on Southern and most
Western trains, grits are usually an option at breakfast, along
with hash brown potatoes. (There's a lot more about dining-car
procedures and protocol in chapter 6, “Life Onboard.”)
