the quiet car is unreserved. My advice? If you have to trample a
little old lady to get a seat in the quiet car, do it!
Short-Haul Trains in California
Amtrak's Capitol Corridor service runs from San Jose, Califor-
nia, north through the Bay Area to Oakland and Berkeley, where
it swings eastward to Davis and Sacramento, with additional lim-
ited service going on to Auburn at the base of the Sierra Nevada
mountains. These trains feature bi-level coaches and a cafe car.
The entire route takes a bit over three hours to complete.
Similar equipment is found on the Pacific Surfliner trains,
which run over a 350-mile route in the southern part of the state
from San Luis Obispo by way of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara
to San Diego. The most frequent service is between L.A. and San
Diego.
Amtrak also operates what's known as the San Joaquin
service; its trains run from Sacramento through the Bay Area,
the vast San Joaquin Valley, and Fresno to Bakersfield. These
all-coach trains, which include cafe cars, use the same Amfleet
equipment found on eastern trains.
Both the Capitol Corridor and Pacific Surfliner trains are
partially subsidized by the State of California. I should also
note that Amtrak also operates quite an extensive system of
bus connections in California, which allow passengers from the
various trains to reach a great many cities and towns not served
by rail.
Viewliner Sleeping Cars
These are the single-level sleepers in Amtrak's fleet, and they
were the first passenger cars that Amtrak was able to create from
square one. These cars were designed for use on overnight trains
