first passenger car. This is where Amtrak carries baggage (includ-
ing bicycles) that has been checked by passengers. Amtrak's own
company material is also carried there: cartons of printed time-
tables to resupply stations along the route, bulk paper goods, and
sometimes nonperishable supplies for the dining car.
Amfleet Coaches
There are two kinds of Amfleet cars. Amfleet I coaches are used
for short-haul runs, have a vestibule at each end of the car, and
will seat 72 passengers. They're used on all-coach trains that run
in the Northeast Corridor, plus on short-haul trains operating
in the East, the Midwest, and the San Joaquin Valley of Cali-
fornia. The other version—Amtrak refers to them as Amfleet II
cars—is used on the overnight trains running in the eastern part
of the United States, specifically the Silver Meteor and the Silver
Amfleet coaches are used on most Amtrak trains running east of the Mississippi River.
