Stacked bar graphs
A stacked bar graph is useful for displaying the whole and its parts over multiple
instances. Emphasis is on the whole, but you can get a sense of the part in relation to
the whole in each instance.
Divided-bar graphs
A divided bar graph shows parts of a whole. Some people prefer divided bar graphs to
pie charts since we are not very accurate at determining the area of a circle. If there are
many small variables, the divided-bar graph may be easier to understand than a pie
chart (though a regular bar chart is easier still).
