In-Depth Information
i reference the file (notice the extension): http://visualrevenue.com/blog/
PDF/Best-Pratices-for-Online-Travel-and-Hospitality.pdf on the following page:
http://visualrevenue.com/blog/2007/10/what-and-how-to-measure-online-travel.html .
if you provide the HtML web page as a reference for visitors to get the file, and if they
indeed click the link provided on that page, Yahoo! Web analytics will track the click
as a download.
it is not a measurement of whether the download was actually started or whether
it was completed; it is only a reference point to the fact that someone initiated it. Initi-
ated means clicking the file link in question on the page that you are tracking. tracking
is not associated with the file itself as such.
on the other hand, if you reference the PdF file in your marketing material
directly, as in http://visualrevenue.com/blog/PDF/Best-Pratices-for-Online-Travel-
and-Hospitality.pdf , Yahoo! Web analytics will not register this, and usage statistics
are lost. this inaccuracy is common to all page-tagging solutions.
the ability to create a reference to the downloadable file is provided out of the
box, and you need not do anything else but install the plain-vanilla tracking code.
one interesting result of tracking downloads is that you can create a trended
report for a unique file, which looks like the example in Figure 2.2.
