Instrumentation for Flash-Based Objects
there is no argument for not tracking activity and events within your Flash applica-
tions. Yahoo! Web Analytics unfortunately does not support native Flash tracking at
this point, but I am confident that this is a feature that is on Yahoo!'s roadmap.
this lack of support does not mean that you cannot track any Flash activity;
it just means that you have to apply a somewhat known and acceptable hack: a hack
accomplished simply by calling a Javascript from within your code, which is not a spe-
cific Yahoo! Web Analytics functionality as such but more of a general opportunity to
expand the code.
I am not going to delve too much into this topic as I am sure you will see more
native tracking coming from Yahoo!, and I believe that most of the web analytics ven-
dors will end up supporting true and native Flash tracking at some point in time.
that said, the standard plain-vanilla HttP tracking script from Yahoo! Web
Analytics is suitable for tracking a Flash application. You simply add a number of code
lines to your sWF file.
Shockwave Flash (SWF)
SWF is a partially open file format for multimedia and especially vector graphics developed
by Adobe.
