In-Depth Information
8.6 Chapter 4 : Rotations
8.6.1 Objectives
• To investigate the physical quantities moment of inertia and angular momentum
• To analyze the conservation of angular momentum in rotational motion
• To relate the change in the angular velocity to modifications in the mass
distribution of a rotational system
8.6.2 Activity 5: Moment of Inertia and Angular Momentum
8.6.2.1 Necessary Materials
- 4 large paper clips that will play the role of distributed masses
- Rubber band strip
- Tape
- Sewing thread
- Scissors
- Pliers
- Rigid metallic wire
8.6.2.2 Procedure
1. Cut two pieces of rigid metallic wire with an equal length of approximately 20 cm.
The length of the rubber band strip must be longer than the length of the clip.
2. Construct the arrangement of Fig. 8.8 with the metallic wires.
