8.3.3 Activity 2: Conditions for the Static Equilibrium
with Respect to Translation
The static equilibrium of a suspended object subject to three coplanar forces shown
in Fig. 8.5 will be established. The magnitude of these forces will be determined, by
using the spring scales previously constructed and calibrated in Activity 1. We shall
verify, using decomposition of forces, if the static equilibrium conditions in relation
to translation are satisfied.
8.3.3.1 Procedure
1. Suspend an object with known mass by using two spring scales as illustrated in
Fig. 8.5a . In this figure, F 1 is the result of the readout of spring scale 1 and F 2 ,of
spring scale 2. The result of the readout means the value of the magnitude
