Adding new attributes
Your client for the Bestaurants project reviewed your initial geodatabase and suggested
some changes. They noticed that you have a name field for each feature class, but they
need to have the
DESCRIPTION
and
REVIEW
attributes, which can help the customers by
giving them more descriptive information about a particular restaurant. To add these attrib-
utes, perform the following steps (make sure all instances of ArcMap and ArcCatalog are
closed):
1. Open a fresh session of
ArcCatalog
and browse to the
Bestaurants
geodata-
base. Start adding the two attributes to the
Diners
feature class.
2. Right-click on the
Diners
feature class and select
Properties
.
3. In the
Properties ...
dialog, select the
Fields
tab in case it is not already activated.
4. Click on the first empty row below the last field in the
Field Name
column and
type
DESCRIPTION
. Select
Text
from the
Data Type
column.
5. Similarly, add the
REVIEW
attribute of the type
Text
.
6. Add the two fields to all the feature classes.
7. To delete an attribute, select it and hit the
Delete
key.
Note
You cannot add or delete a new attribute when the geodatabase is locked or is currently in
use by ArcMap, for instance.
Leave
ArcCatalog
open as we will use it for the next topic where we will show you how to
modify the properties of the attributes.
