So what exactly does compacting do? As you might have guessed, compacting perman-
ently removes these records and any other orphan records that are not used or referenced
by any other objects. This is why compacting relatively speeds up queries against file
geodatabases. As you can see in the next figure, Croton's can be found much more ef-
ficiently with a compacted geodatabase:
