The most recent owner, Don Conley, has avoided any unnecessary modernization of Jack's. The
building still has the same façade and décor of its early days, including two original Old West-style
paintings. One of the paintings shows a traditional sheriff sitting in a chair. One evening, a drunk
customer, just out of jail, was so enraged by the badge-wearing lawman in the painting that he shot
the painting five times. All the bullets hit within 4 inches of the badge. Bullet holes in the wall be-
hind the painting were not discovered until 40 years later.
One of the original traditions of Jack's, still observed today, is the 1-pound steak. Loggers, min-
ers, and construction workers always wanted a substantial meal after a very long and exhausting
work day, and Jack served each worker a pound of beef, and today you can get the same meal, or if
you wish, a downsized version including New York strips, top sirloin, or filet mignon.
Walking into Jack's is like walking into the 1930s. Seventeen stools at the bar and old-style
booths and tables accentuate the retro atmosphere. Locally owned from its very inception, Jack's is
truly a part of California history.
