The Famous McClure Cocktail
This is the invention of Senator John J. McClure of the
Pennsylvania State Senate. The recipe for this 1930s drink
was a secret, except to his sons, who were sworn to secrecy
until his death in 1965. The senator never had a problem
enticing his political friends over to the house, because
they anticipated a McClure Cocktail after a session of po-
litical strategizing. No matter how many times they asked
about the ingredients, he never told, so they kept coming
back—exactly as he wanted. The recipe comes to The
Palm courtesy of Walter McClure, grandson of its creator
and senior vice president of operations for The Palm. The
best-quality ingredients make the best cocktail, so feel free
to upgrade the brandy to cognac.
2 parts brandy
2 parts gin
1 part orange Curacao
1 part apricot liqueur
This is not a cocktail for which you can “eyeball” the
proportions; use a jigger or a large measuring device.
Prepare the mixture in a pitcher ahead of time and
refrigerate until very, very cold.
Not for the weak of heart, this cocktail is neither
diluted nor garnished. Serve “up” only, in a cocktail
glass. It must never, ever touch ice.
