As the society (also called the Marianists) expanded, they arrived in the new land of California
in 1884. Realizing the need for a school, they seized the opportunity to purchase the current 300-
acre site of Chaminade for $50,000 in 1923. After using the existing structure for several years, the
brothers elected to build a high school.
In 1930, the ground floor was completed and the Chaminade Boys High School opened. Exami-
nation of the building will show very sturdy construction, designed to hold the weight of a second
floor, which was not completed. This structure is the current main building, where the resort's
meeting rooms and restaurants are located.
During World War II, the high school became a center for training priests in the Marianist
order. In the early 1970s, Chaminade became a religious retreat and, in 1979, it was converted into
a hotel and conference facility.
Located on a mountain ridge overlooking Monterey Bay only 90 minutes south of San Fran-
cisco, Chaminade offers 300 acres of luxury in the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Set in the
mild climate and scenic beauty of this resort community, Chaminade offers casual light meals in
Linwood's, breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets in the Sunset Dining Room, and fine dining in The
Library.
