An enduring symbol of the hotel, as well as the meeting point for generations of guests and
locals alike, is the famed Magneta Grandfather Clock. Installed in the hotel's Powell Street lobby
in 1907 following the earthquake, it serves as a master clock, controlling all the other clocks in the
hotel. The common refrain of “Meet me at the clock!” has echoed throughout the halls for a century.
The first master clock brought to the West, the Magneta Grandfather Clock is an enduring symbol
of the hotel's longevity and history.
