ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Michael H. Bartl is an associate professor of
chemistry and adjunct professor of physics at
the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, UT,
USA. He earned his doctorate in chemistry from
Karl-Franzens University, Graz, Austria, and
conducted postdoctoral research at the Univer-
sity of California, Santa Barbara, with Professors
Galen Stucky and Evelyn Hu. He was the recipi-
ent of a DuPont Young Professorship in 2007. In
2010, he was named an Emerging Investigator by
the Journal of Materials Chemistry and a Brilliant
10 researcher by Popular Science magazine. His
group studies functional materials for energy
and information technology applications,
including bioinspired photonics, nanocrystals,
and thin films.
Aditi S. Risbud is a science writer and materials
scientist. She earned a doctorate in materials
science and engineering from the University of
California, Santa Barbara, USA, with thesis
work on magnetic semiconductor materials. She
also holds a certificate in science communica-
tions from the University of California, Santa
Cruz. Currently, she is the senior communica-
tions and marketing officer for the University of
Utah's College of Engineering. Previously, she
directed communications and outreach efforts
for the Molecular Foundry, a nanoscience user
facility at Lawrence Berkeley National Labora-
tory, and started her career in science communi-
cations at global public relations firm Weber
Shandwick.
