ABOUT THE AUTHORS
Javaan Chahl obtained his bachelor's degree in
computer engineering from the University of
Newcastle, Australia, in 1991. He completed a
graduate diploma of neuroscience at the
Australian National University (ANU) in 1992
and was awarded his doctorate in 1997 for
biologically inspired machine vision systems.
He joined the Defence Science and Technology
Organisation (DSTO) in 1999 and continued at
the ANU on attachment until 2005, when he
relocated his laboratories to DSTO. In 2011,
Javaan joined RMIT University as the first
Professor of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. In July
2012, Javaan joined the University of South
Australia as Chair of Sensor Systems.
Akiko Mizutani completed her doctorate in biol-
ogy from the Kyushu University in Japan in 1996.
She obtained a computer science graduate degree
in 1999 from Monash University, Australia. Since
2004 she has been the CEO of Odonatrix Pty.
Ltd., a technology company specializing in
research on integrated aerospace systems.
