inventors of ionic polymer-metal composites
(IPMCs), which are distributed nanoactuators,
nanosensors, energy harvesters, and nanotrans-
ducers. He is also a pioneer in using IPMCs for
left ventricular heart-assist systems (LVAS) as
well as Ptosis (eyelid droop syndrome) and
microcatheter stirrer for endovascular surgery
and robotic surgery. He is currently involved
with the applications and extensions of IPMCs to
medicine and robotic surgery as well as biopoly-
mers. He has also done a great deal lot of work
on industrial applications of IPMCs, in particular
a new family of smart materials called robomorphs
that can be used for inspection in very tight and
constrained spaces.
Mohsen Shahinpoor is the Richard C. Hill
Professor and Chair of the Mechanical Engineering
Department at the University of Maine in Orono.
He is also the director of Biomedical Engineering
and Robotic Surgery Labs at the University of
Maine. In the early 1990s he was one of the
