In-Depth Information
Language
In addition to the official languages of the
Central Asian countries covered in this topic -
Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Turkmen and Uzbek -
the one language most useful for travellers in
these countries is still Russian, as you'll find
that it's the second language for most adults.
RUSSIAN
Just read the coloured pronunciation guides
given next to each Russian phrase in this
section as if they were English, and you'll
be understood. Note that the symbol
kh
is
pronounced as the 'ch' in the Scottish
loch,
zh
as the 's' in 'pleasure',
r
is rolled and the
apostrophe ( ' ) indicates a slight
y
sound. The
stressed syllables are indicated with italics.
