Schools, universities, and alumni associations
Did you graduate from an art school or from a university with a large depart-
ment or school in your specialty? If so, you could have an invaluable resource at
hand. A specialized school might offer career counseling and even placement services
for alums. As a service to their students, schools often offer great career links. Even if
they don't, they're usually well-connected with firms in their local area and commit-
ted to offering useful information that can be exactly what you need for your target
audience search.
Some art and design schools have an intricate network of alumni associations
in major cities worldwide. Local alumni clubs have lists of companies with established
professionals who are willing to offer informational interviews—or even a shot at real
jobs—to other alums. They can help you match your skills and interests with compa-
nies whose style and philosophy are compatible with your own. Even nongraduates
can sometimes find these organizations helpful. You can use their lists of prestigious
firms and contact names in a category search or to find possible targets in a geo-
graphical area that interests you.
Searching with Google
Unquestionably, the Internet is the single best tool for capturing information.
There's almost nothing you can't find out about potential clients or employees—in
general or in specific—by using Internet resources. And Google is the tool of choice
for searching it.
