But even the unique “you” changes according to
your mood and situation. Kicking back with friends
sparks a different state of mind than visiting your
family. It should. You're relating to people whose
assumptions, goals, and values are probably galax-
ies apart. However, unless you're a chameleon, you
don't become someone new with each group. You
adapt your style to make the people you're with
more comfortable with you.
Creating a portfolio that speaks effectively to pro-
spective clients or employers might require similar
adjustments. But when you are with different
groups, you have the benefit of knowing their
expectations already. You've had years to learn the
unspoken code of conduct that each situation
requires. That's probably not true of your portfolio
audience. To get your share of the current opportu-
nities, you need to be aware of what your market
desires, and show that awareness explicitly with
your portfolio.
