Chickpea is acknowledged as the poor man's meat
because of its high nutritional value, especially its pro-
tein content. Chickpea is affected by various abiotic
stresses but drought is considered the most important
environmental constraint to crop productivity. There is
a lack of simple and accurate screening procedures to
screen parental genotypes and breeding populations for
various abiotic stresses, and this is the major bottleneck
in the development of stress-tolerant cool season pulse
crops. Genotypes resistant to various abiotic stresses are
not widely available to breeders. According to some
researchers wild species of cool season pulse crops pos-
sess desired traits for a number of abiotic stresses, and
conventional or biotechnological approaches are needed
to develop cultivars resistant to abiotic stress. The tol-
erant varieties mentioned in this chapter shall help
the ongoing and future investigations of abiotic stress
in chickpea with the aim of developing durable stress
tolerance.
