Planet OS
André Karpištšenko is Co-Founder and Research Lead at Planet OS, a data
discovery engine for sensor and machine data. Planet OS's mission is to index the
physical world using data coming from robotic devices located in oceans, land, air,
and space. Through public and private programs, more than a million satellites,
radars, and mobile and fixed sensor platforms are capturing data in a variety of for-
mats, conventions, and time scales. Planet OS finds the data sources, connects them,
and cleans the data to enable access, analysis via its cloud-based solution, yielding
real-time insight in a variety of settings: government agencies, energy companies, off-
shore and maritime industries, weather forecasting, remote sensing, and unmanned
vehicle operations. Building and maintaining this platform to connect, maintain, and
make the data usable to a variety of industries poses significant challenges given
the variety and size of data involved, the public/private ownership behind the data
generating sensors, and the required streamlining of different standards, protocols,
and data models.
Karpištšenko previously founded and led the Data Analytics Research Team at Skype.
While at Skype, he also led the Engineering Infrastructure group as well as the Client
Quality team. Before that, he was a co-founder of ASA Quality Services, a software quality
assurance company, which he bootstrapped to profitability. Karpištšenko started out
his career developing software for organizations such as the European Environmental
Agency. He has many publications and patents in the fields of data processing and
analysis and software process improvement and collaboration. Karpištšenko holds an
MSc in Management of Production from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden,
and a BSc in Informatics (cum laude) from Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia.
