In-Depth Information
I continued on toward Dakar into headwinds. The scenery became greener the fur-
ther south I went. Ninety-nine kilometres from Dakar, I saw a beautiful crucifix and altar
surroundedbytreesneartheroadandaskedtwowomeniftherewasachurchnearby.They
told me yes and escorted me to a simple structure with a small elementary school adjacent
to it. I asked if I could stay the night in one of the vacant classrooms since classes would
resume the next month. They said that it wouldn't be a problem.
As I was resting, Jerome came by the school and invited me to visit his family. His
home was made of concrete with a roof made of timber and dried palm leaves. He offered
me rice and fish which I ate with his brothers. After an engaging conversation, I went to
the corner store to buy a coffee. There, the whole village gathered around a TV to watch a

I made a mad dash for my classroom/hotel where I settled in for the night.
