SomeonesentforAidatocomeoutandsettlethesituation.Meanwhile,Ibefriended
General Block who was quite interested that I would be visiting Peru. When Aida arrived,
I explained the incident at the airport and my issue with the security guard. Aida asked the
guard to return my passport, asked me to leave my bike beside the security office, and then
gave me clearance to enter the HQ. He asked me to wait in the canteen for the governor's
letter of permission. Before he left, I asked him which flight I would be on. He said it
would be Friday's 3 pm flight. As I settled into my seat, Commander Sawchuck walked in
and headed straight to me. He was still incensed about the incident and I guess he wanted
to vent. He was upset that he needed permission from the governor to put his people on his
planes. He argued that if the UN Security General came to visit MINURSO, he would still
need permission from the governor because the UN Security General was not an official
MINURSO staff member. He was bent on changing that protocol a.s.a.p. When the com-
mander left, I just read the paper and waited for news. Aida returned a few hours later to
say that the permission letter was being signed by the governor and to pick it up on Friday
morning. He also said that transportation from my hotel to the airport was being arranged.
With nothing else for me to do, I thanked Aida for everything…and I do mean
everything, and was driven to my hotel. I booked for two more nights and simply spent my
time walking through Laayoune photographing the sites.
