shop until I arrived in Spain.
Ithusbeganmyslowascenttothemouthofthetunnel.TheroadfromArreautoSt.
Lary-Soulan was extremely beautiful and relatively easy. There were some pristine lakes
along the way with majestic mountains rising in the background. The road followed the
meandering river far below. As I cycled higher, the road became challenging at times not
becauseofthetrafficbutbecauseofthegradient.Howevertheweatherwasabsolutelyper-
fect for climbing.
Slowly but surely I made way to the police check point. I stopped the bike to
find no one in the booth. From the building on my right, I heard the clanging of plates.
I looked at my watch and realized that it was 1:00. I called out and then waited for three
minutes. No one came, so I decided to move on. The road was almost deserted with
traffic. There was such tranquility that it took my mind off the cycling. I came upon a
treeless area with only the outline of the road to indicate that civilization existed.
