In-Depth Information
Asapresenter,Ireallyneverknewwhatmyaudiencewasabsorbingandifmymes-
sage ever sunk in. I had two contrasting examples to illustrate this. First, there was that
experience with the students of Camps Bay School where I thought they weren't listening
and was proven wrong. The second experience occurred at my final presentation in South
Africa at Sans Souci Girls School. I thought I made an impact during my presentation and
Q & A session for they seemed so engaged. However, when I went out with their teacher
Cathy for a walk, she told me that as soon as I left, the girls were debating whether or not
…I was good-looking or not. I met up with Cathy afterwards and was invited to her home
to view her friend's slide presentation on Morocco.
A Big Decision
I felt that it was time for me to leave the country. I had decided to cut out South
and Central America completely and fly to Florida to resume my world tour. I went into
town and bought a one-way ticket to Miami via New York for the following week. When I
called my mom to tell her my plans, she panicked, “Please don't go there. It is so danger-
ous.” (This was the time of the bump-and-rob incidents in Miami when a German tourist
was shot and killed.) So, I said OK to her just to give her peace of mind for I had every
intention of going.
However, six days before departure my plans had to change again. To condition
myself for distance cycling, I cycled the route of a popular road race called 'The Argus',
sponsored by one of Cape Town's newspapers. I loaded my gear on the bike and started
off. However, it was in the last stretch of the route when I had this excruciating pain in my
right knee. It was so severe that I could hardly bend it at all. Cycling home was one of the
hardest things I ever had to do.
On my way home, I hobbled by the US Embassy to see how things were in Florida
(in regards to the bump-and-rob). The clerk seemed insulted.
