to climb it. We started from Skeleton Gorge at Kirstenbosh Botanical Gardens and were
almost completely enclosed in the dense foliage. Even though it was quite exciting to have
a cascading waterfall beneath my feet, I was constantly afraid of slipping on the protrud-
ing wet rocks or tripping on the roots. There were wild flowers everywhere and the aromas
were intoxicating. When we arrived at the top I was expecting a flat surface as seen from
the ground but was surprised to find it so uneven.
As we came down Platte Klip Gorge, we met several climbers on the way up who
foolishly were climbing without any water. I was concerned for one woman in particu-
lar who seemed dangerously dehydrated. Since I had been rationing my water during the
climb, I had quite a bit left to give her. We eventually hiked to the bottom and waited by
the cable car entrance for June to pick us up.
The next day was spent in the city as a 'me' day. I assumed that it would be my last
day in South Africa so once I received my letter of introduction from Nedlloyds Shipping
I just meandered in the city centre. I bought a card, flowers and candles for the Boulles as
a parting thank-you gift and returned home. We had many things to celebrate that evening
which included David's new job and my departure.
