in Africa it's impossible. Nestlé is absolutely everywhere!
Final Preparations
Since the UK Promotional Tour was to begin from Cornwall and not to return, I
took a quick trip to London to drop off things that would not be carried with me on the
bicycle. The Sciclunas, a great and dear family, permitted me to keep everything in storage
in their home. It actually turned out to be for three years! Paul, the 12-year-old middle son
signed up to be my PR Rep while I was touring.
WhenIreturnedtoCornwall,Ihadthet-shirtsprinted,setthecalltimesforbothra-
dio stations and established my UK and World Tour itineraries. My immunization records
were up-to-date and packed along with my reference letters. At Lloyds Bank in Helston,
the STC bank account was established for donations and posters were placed in the main
foyer and at the community center.
Finally,Isettled allmyaccountswithNAAFIandthemilitary base.Ihandedinmy
uniform and cleaned my room one last time…never to return.
From the base, I cycled south and arrived around 11:30 at the Hotel Panbrean in

I settled in my room but at first I couldn't sleep. All the possible 'bridges' were
flashing through my mind at a frightening speed. What would I do if…? I kept picturing
worse-case scenarios. The hundreds of conversation I had over the course of planning the
tourbecamethesoundtracktotheimages:whatpeoplesaid,didn'tsay,implied,theirpraise
and their ridicule. It all replayed faster and faster as I lay in bed staring at the ceiling.
Then I came to a single realization. In the morning, all I had to do was cross my
firstbridge:simply…tostartcycling.Ifeltanenormousweightliftoffmybeingandbegan
to relax. I actually smiled when it dawned on me how far I had come from that 'moment'
back on September 10, 1991. I eventually drifted to sleep mentally ready to start my UK
Promotional Tour for Save the Children Fund…as planned.
