The next day, I did my first radio interview in the city on the national broadcaster
SABC and then headed to the Rotary Luncheon where I was the guest speaker. They made
a cheque out to STC-Johannesburg and sent it on my behalf. I came home quite late and
one of Reinier's housemates, Tiaan Meyer who was another architecture student, cooked
dinnerforme.Ispenttherestoftheeveninglisteningtomusic,especiallytothesoundtrack
of The Mission (I fell in love with “Gabriel's Oboe” by Ennio Morricone.)
The next morning I was invited to speak at Unisie Girls College (Grey's counter-
part.)Ipresentedfor45minutesandagain,thehonorariumwassenttoSTC-Johannesburg.
When I finished, I had to rush home to prepare for my Radio Oranje interview with Manie
Kitching.
My Best Radio Interview Ever
Inthe studio, Isat in the vacant chair across from Manie and before we went onair,
he said that I had 10 minutes. I thanked him for the opportunity and waited quietly as he
introduced me. The interview started and his questions were really engaging. So much so,
that I lost track of time. I eventually realized that he stretched my allotted 10 minute slot
to 1½ hours. He even had me help him read out the song requests too. When the interview
was over, and we cut to a commercial he slapped the table and said to me “I want you to
come to my home for dinner and meet my wife, friends and three cats.” He gave me his
address and phone number and at the end of his radio show, he himself drove me to the
university for I was to be interviewed by their paper and radio station.
The next day I was invited to speak at the township schools to share my experien-
ces. My message was the same however the only difference in my presentation was that I
needed an interpreter.

work and then was taken back to the house to get ready for Lieutenant Wood from the Sal-
vation Army was to pick me up to speak to his group at his home.
The next day, I went to St. Michael's School in the morning to share my experien-
ces. At the end of the presentation, the principal thanked me and upon my request, prom-
