Looking for Sponsors: A Cautionary Tale
A word of advice to future fundraisers looking for sponsors: Do your homework
and research who you want to involve first before approaching them. I didn't and as a
resultIhadmyworstnightmare onApril7,1992.Iwouldliketodiscusswhathappenedto
me at length but before I do, I need to give some background details:
Back in 1989, Cathe, a good friend who I worked with in Toronto, found a new job
with Nestlé Canada Inc. When I returned to Canada in February 1992, I called Cathe at
NestléhopingthatshewouldputinagoodwordformeforIwaslookingtohaveNestléas
a corporate sponsor. I sent a PR package to them using her as my contact.
OnApril1,1992Ireceived afaxfromNestléCanada.Theyofferednotonlyacash
donation and a willingness to promote the tour among their employees but also wanted to
sell copies ofmypromotional t-shirts that Iwasgoingtowear duringthe tour. All Ineeded
to do was to place their logo on my shirts and send them the banking information. Wow! I
was more than delighted…I was excited!
I used Nestlé Canada's support to pressure Nestlé UK to join as well. So that very
day I prepared a PR package which included a copy of Nestlé Canada's fax and sent it the
next morning.
