public speaking engagement and what a joy it was. I talked to them about the tour and they
asked me lots of questions. I then made a promise to myself that if opportunities like this
arose in the future, I would always make time to share my experiences. (This was a prom-
ise I kept.)
I said my final good-byes and started on the most beautiful road I'd ever seen. The
birds were singing and the views really captured my attention. Even though there were
heavywinds,Ididn'tmindtheslowerpaceforIusedtheopportunitytoreflectonthework
of both the local and international missionaries that I met. They were my heroes.
I arrived in Bafia by 3:30 p.m. but decided to keep going for another 17 kilometres.
I arrived at the Catholic mission in Ombéssa and since there was a service going on, I
slipped into the back of the church and quietly sat. Afterwards, I spoke to Abbé Pierre-
Marie who welcomed me to stay in a guest room. He had a radiant personality and made
conversation both fun and interesting. We watched a football match together before dinner
and then I went to bed.
I woke up quite early the next morning and waited for Abbé Pierre-Marie to wake
up. When he did, we had breakfast together and by 8:00 a.m. I was on the road greeted by
a thick mist which gave the rainforest an eerie look.

attention on my surroundings. I crossed the Sanaga River on a bridge that was over a kilo-
metre long and after entering a rather flat area, I started to climb. Even though the gradi-
ent was not difficult, I still found it tough to get into any rhythm and the 5-kilometre road
markers seemed to take longer to get to. When I was 15 kilometres outside of Yaoundé, I
took a break to recite the Rosary after which I tackled the last difficult hill before entering
the capital.
I quickly approached the city and upon arrival I asked several people for directions
to the Canadian Embassy. I finally arrived at 4:00 p.m. and leaving my bike against the
building, I took my documents into the office and met Joe Champagne, one of the secret-
