In-Depth Information
Once I obtained the visa, I decided not to stay in the capital but moved on to Porto
Novo. I knew that the Salesians had a mission there and in true Salesian fashion, they were
located in the center of the slums. After being welcomed by the Father José, I was given
a place to sleep and then took a shower. I, the “ toobab ” (white man) shocked many locals
when I walked out of the mission and joined them to eat at a street stall.
As I did in Lomé, I stayed for a very short time in both Cotonou and Porto Novo.
I did not explore either city and hence had little to reflect on except for the kindness and
hospitality of those that I met. The next day I was to enter Nigeria.
