In no time at all, we arrived in Guéckédou and cycled along the Bakundo River.
This was the town you would leave from if you were heading to Liberia and Sierra Leone.
We cycled through the bustling market and found the Catholic mission. Abbé Victor wel-
comed us and soon we unpacked our bikes and made our way to mass. Afterward, we met
the local veterinarian and the pharmacist who was also the UNICEF representative. He in-
vitedustohishomefordinnerandthenwestayedacoupleofhourschatting.Hewantedus
to visit the director, Fritz Foster from Plan Guinea (Foster Parent Plan) the next morning.
We took him up on his offer and decided to leave for Macenta after the visit. As it turned
out, the next day's plans quickly changed.
Earlythenextmorning,wepreparedourgearforaquickdepartureafterourvisitto
Plan Guinea. We met Fritz at his office and chatted for half an hour. He then asked us if we
wanted to go visit some of his projects. Being open to suggestions, we headed with him in
a4by4through17kilometres ofveryroughterrain. Even with ourseat belts fastened, we
werejostledlikeragdolls(Iactuallyprefercyclingtothis.)Fritzpointedthatwewereonly
4kilometres fromtheborderofthetroublednationofLiberia. Thatexplained whythearea
wasinundatedwithrefugees.WediscussedtheroleofNGOsandthenotionofdependence
on the West in some key areas, namely leadership, technology and information.
