On the Road To Recovery
By the fifth day, I was doing errands on my own. I walked over to the post office to
mail several letters and did some shopping. I met some European travelers who were off to
the waterfalls near Pita (south of Labé).
On my last day, I was invited by a UNICEF representative to visit some of their
projects in and around Labé. Needless to say it was great to leave my immediate area. One
project we visited was a compound that included a clinic and a co-operative for 110 single
mothers (12-14 years of age). For the co-operative, the government donated sewing ma-
chines and the products that the mothers made were sold in the market (I bought a table-
cloth for Mary). The profits were then re-invested into the co-operative. An example of this
reinvestment was the construction of a crèche for their children. Another example of this
reinvestment was in the health clinic. Aside from the typical health services, there was lots
of literature made available to the mothers regarding infant care, hygiene, AIDS and other
diseases.
