We turned onto a side road and started to drive slightly downhill. At the lowest
point of the road, a large pond formed and was about 30 m in length, 20 metres in width
andabout1meterdeep.Talkaboutpracticality:thelocalwomenofthevillagecametothis
large pond and began to do their laundry.
Slowly we passed through the pond and finally arrived into the village. We parked
the truck and walked over to a large crowd. A village elder greeted us and explained that
we were witnessing the coming-of-age ceremony of the boys in the village. With permis-
sion, I took several photos of the boys dressed in full traditional clothing as they danced.
The elder told us that the boys were psyching themselves to go into the forest for a week
to live off the land. Upon their return, they would be welcomed back to the village as men.
Once the music stopped, the boys stopped dancing. We then accompanied them across a
field to the edge of the forest where upon the boys disappeared between the trees.
