The activation energy for metal reduction onto a preformed particle
is significantly lower than that for homogenous nucleation of seed
particles in a solution [1]. Heterogeneous nucleation process can be
considered an overgrowth process where seed particles are added
to a growth medium to facilitate the reduction of metal ions.
