In-Depth Information
Southern blot analysis using many short probes that consecutively cover the full length
of the genome fragment will be effective.

Reconstruction of the evolutionary process of the horizontal genome transfer: in addition
to the Japanese populations, a survey of foreign populations of C. chinensis would lead
to interesting discoveries such as populations without wBruAus or populations infected
with bacterial wBruAus. One of our goals is to reconstruct the evolutionary process of
the horizontal genome transfer through comparative and phylogenetic analyses of diverse
types of wBruAus found in natural host populations.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The authors thank A. Sugimura, S. Kumagai, and K. Sato for technical and secretarial assistance
and M. Shimada and H. Ishikawa for encouragement. Preliminary sequence data of Wolbachia sp.
from Drosophila melanogaster, which was accomplished with support from the National Institutes
of Health, were obtained from the Institute for Genomic Research through the Web site at
http://www.tigr.org. These studies were supported by the Program for Promotion of Basic Research
Activities for Innovation Biosciences (ProBRAIN) of the Bio-Oriented Technology Research
Advancement Institution.
