FIG. 7.19 Clean up the topology on the top of the foot.
Create a series of Cuts running back from each toe to the next quad
(Figure 7.19f ) to move the n-gon back.
Finally, we can remove the triangles between each toe. Select the central
edges and delete them, turning the triangles into quads (Figure 7.19g).
The top of the foot now looks much cleaner, and we are starting to achieve
better topology, which will allow us to add detail into the foot.
Next, turn the foot over and look underneath—not pretty, is it? Let's clean this
up next.
Start by making sure you have edges running back from the toes (Figure
7.20 a). Just Cut across the n-gons to achieve this.
We have an n-gon on the outer foot; this was probably created when we
added the cut across the upper foot. Continue this Cut across, up to the
base of the big toe (Figure 7.20b).
Looking at the toes now, we can see the n-gons created by the earlier
bevel. Select the edges shown in Figure 7.20c and Merge them, giving you
something like that in Figure 7.20d.
We still have some odd geometry between the i rst two toes, most likely
a triangle or two. Before we can safely remove these, we need to create a
few more cuts, moving back from the toes and removing a few n-gons as
we go (Figure 7.20e).
