In-Depth Information
If you opted to stroll along the river road, you are at liberty to stop and take pictures where
you like, grab a beer or snack, and otherwise relax.
If you opted to head for the steps and Phu Si, find the entrance along the side street.
At 100 meters high, it's more like a hill than a mountain. That said, 330 steps may feel like
a mountain by now. You'll pay the entrance fee about a third of the way up, and may be
encouraged to buy and release some birds. Whether you believe in 'making merit' or not,
the reality is that the birds will almost certainly be recaptured and resold to the next tourists
that scamper up the hill.
On a positive note, the monks are friendly, and not just in a 'give us money' sort of way.
Wat Chom Si and its gilded stupa make the climb worth it, just in case the view wasn't
enough. Note: This is intentionally timed to avoid a peak tourist crowd, who will be up and
around when the sun begins to set. If you're OK with the crowds, hang out here longer -
we're almost done with the official itinerary today anyway.
