the city was added as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995. This revitalized the area,
which is now slowly gentrifying and plenty more touristy than ever before. Luang Prabang's
UNESCO heritage status comes from the "fusion of traditional architecture and Lao urban
structures with those built by the European colonial authorities in the 19th and 20th centur-
ies". Today, the "urban structures" are still around, though far more of them are used in the
tourist sector than as private homes.
