In-Depth Information
If you have booked the late morning flight (or, if times change, a flight that arrives between
noon and 1:00pm), grab a quick lunch and skip to the next day in this itinerary.
If you booked another flight (or, if times change, any flights that arrive after 1:00pm), con-
sider this a free day to explore and meander off the itinerary, or skip a thing or two and be
back on track. Your call.
Getting to the airport is most easily arranged via tuk-tuk. 40,000 - 50,000 kip for a 20-30
minute ride is average.
OPTION B: Intercity bus
While not the fastest way across the country, the price can't be beat and the experience is
one you're unlikely to forget. This is a 12 hour bus ride in the best-case scenario, which
presumes the bus doesn't break down or is forced to stop for one reason or another. The
bus will stop periodically, sometimes to deliver supplies, and sometimes for toilet / food
breaks.
It is incredibly cheap, considering it's a long ride - a mere 110,000 kip, or 130,000 kip for
the 'VIP' bus. The 'VIP' bus is a poor name for a hand-me-down bus originally from China
or Korea, but is still reasonably comfortable. The biggest issues are bumpy roads and end-
less curves. Stock up on snacks, drinks, and consider taking something to help you sleep.
Choosing this option means this is a travel-only day on your itinerary. No destinations
today, except for the ones you enjoy along the way.
Buses to Luang Prabang leave from Vientiane's Northern Bus Terminal, and a tuk-tuk can
get you there in 20 minutes for 50,000 - 60,000 kip. VIP buses leave at 8am, 9am, 7:30pm,
and 8pm (a sleeper-bus service that charges a couple bucks more). Regular buses leave at
6:30am, 7:30am, 8:30am, 11:00am, 1:30pm, 4:00pm, and 6:00pm.
8:00 pm -- From the plane (or the bus) to a guesthouse
Price: LAK ₭40000.00 (for a single adult)
Duration: 15 minutes
From either the Luang Prabang airport or the bus terminals, the tuk-tuks are ever present. If
you have a guesthouse already picked out (Sokdee Residence is the one I stayed at myself,
and will recommend), tell the driver the name, or just accept the drive to the center of town.
