with a manual bike, get an automatic scooter bike. Insist on a helmet for each rider - adjust

Lao people tend to be pretty laid-back, but the last thing you want is to have to pay some
extortionate fee to get your passport back because of some supposed scratch. Take pictures
of and point out any damage before you jump on the motorbike. Expect to pay 100,000 -
150,000 kip for the day's use, and you'll also be expected to pay for your own fuel - ask
them to point out a nearby gas station.
From Vientiane, you'll be leaving on the road going southeast out of town, Rue Setthath-
ilath. This is a one way road, going the correct way. Just stay on this main road / express-
way-drive/rideforabout13km,andyou'llseetheunmistakable yellowbuildingandsteel
tanks on either side.
IF HIRING A TUK-TUK:
Show the driver your itinerary for the day, and ensure he hears ' round-trip ' unless you want
to go somewhere and stay there. Be sure to negotiate a bit, and you shouldn't need to pay
the full amount up-front. Presuming your main bags are locked in your guesthouse or hotel,
there should be little reason to leave anything with the driver. Expect to pay 200,000 -
300,000 kip for the day (remember the conversion rate!), but there are plenty of drivers
around who might accept a bit less.
