exposure intervals between the clip points indicated by the camera histogram
and the actual raw data, however, will vary from camera to camera.
Once you understand exactly what information the histogram can provide for
you, determining the desired exposure in the i eld becomes relatively simple.
For standard exposure techniques bias your exposures so that the histogram
data is pushed up to the right side of the chart, while making sure that the
highlights are not blown out. The ultimate indication of best exposure is the
histogram coupled with artistic interpretation. Learn to read histograms and
you can nail desired exposures in any situation! Depending on the subject
rel ectance and the camera meter's characteristics, the ideal exposure could
actually be more than a stop below or above what the meter reads. We
recommend using the camera meter as a guide to get initial exposure settings,
and then i ne-tune the camera exposure settings based on the histogram data.

Highlights Utilizing the Blinking Highlight
Indicator
Another very useful feature with digital capture is the camera's LCD blinking
highlights display indicator, which displays the blown out highlights
within an image. This indicator illustrates blown out highlights by blinking
the corresponding image components on the camera LCD image display
immediately after capture. Between the histograms and the blinking highlight
indicator, we now have more information about our exposure than we ever
had with i lm!
When activated in the camera menu, this indicator can be extremely valuable
in displaying exactly where we are losing information in the highlights of the
image when they do blow out with undesired exposure mistakes. Utilizing
such important feedback, we can then make important decisions in the i eld
about the importance of the lost highlight information in relationship to the
shadow information and desired interpretation, and re-expose if necessary.
