Highest Quality Capture:
Workl ow Phase I
The best black and white workl ow practices begin with the highest quality
images and a non-destructive editing philosophy. Many of the masters of
traditional photography focused on the craft of working with light in-camera, and
rarely, if ever, manipulated images. Just as the quality of exposure af ected the
quality of darkroom prints, one of the greatest factors in determining the quality
of digital prints is the integrity of the originating pixels. Therefore, as the i rst
phase of the digital workl ow process, this chapter outlines the most important
components of capture for acquiring the highest quality images possible.
I. Capture in Color
As outlined in Chapter 1, if your camera is capable of capturing in a Grayscale
mode, you will want to resist the temptation to choose this setting. Although
it may seem fast and easy, the results will be fast and easy as well. You get
what you pay for, and image capture is no exception. For the highest quality
capture, the capabilities you gain with image quality, as well as editing and
conversion options, are far superior with RGB capture and post production
conversions.
